BIOGRAPHY

Sonia O’Sullivan won the silver medal in the 5000 metres at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, one of the most significant achievements in Irish athletics.

O’Sullivan is from Cobh, County Cork and developed her career through school and club athletics before competing collegiately at Villanova University in the United States, where she became one of the leading distance runners of her generation. She rose to global prominence in the 1990s, combining success across track and cross-country disciplines.

She won gold in the 5000 metres at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg and silver in the 10,000 metres at the 1994 European Championships. She also claimed multiple medals at European Championships across track and cross-country and won the World Cross Country Championships in 1998.

O’Sullivan represented Ireland at four Olympic Games and held numerous world and European records during her career, establishing herself as one of Ireland’s greatest ever athletes.
