Darren O’Neill

BIOGRAPHY

Darren O’Neill captained Ireland’s boxing team at the 2012 London Olympic Games and bore the Irish flag at the closing ceremony – a fitting honour for one of the most respected figures in Irish amateur boxing.

Competing at middleweight (75kg), he won his opening bout 15-6 against Nigeria’s Muideen Olalekan Akanji before losing 19-12 to Germany’s Stefan Härtel in the round of 16.

From Paulstown, Co. Kilkenny, O’Neill played Kilkenny Under-21 hurling before dedicating himself full-time to boxing, training with his father Ollie and brother Aidan in his corner. A qualified primary school teacher, he delayed his Olympic ambitions when he lost a box-off to the late Darren Sutherland for a place at Beijing 2008, but went on to win gold at the 2009 EU Championships, silver at the 2010 European Championships and a place at the 2011 World Championships in Baku, where he secured automatic Olympic qualification.

He was a four-time Irish national middleweight champion and two-time heavyweight champion. After retiring he made a remarkable comeback at the age of 36, becoming the oldest Irish national cruiserweight champion in 2021. He subsequently turned professional.
