David Foster competed in the individual and team three-day eventing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, riding Aughatore.

The competition was held over six days rather than the normal four, as it was split between two venues almost 100 miles apart, requiring a return journey of 100 miles for athletes each day.

Despite this, Foster produced a life-time best in the dressage phase and performed an excellent speed and endurance test, completing a clear cross-country round – one of only 17 of the 52 competitors to do so – though he accumulated time faults that took their toll on Killiney Bay.

The horse was then treated with ultra-sound for several hours overnight by team vet Hugh Suffern before the show jumping phase, but a stiff and tired Killiney Bay took down three fences.

The Irish team finished in 11th place overall after the elimination of the Mexican team.

Foster later competed at the Seoul 1988 Olympics.
