HOCKEY

Hockey is a widely played team sport which was introduced at the Olympic Games as a men’s competition at the 1908 Games in London, with six teams, including four from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The Men’s tournament has been a permanent feature of the Olympic Games, with the exception of 1924. The women’s tournament was added at the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980.

While the sport can be played on many surfaces, at the Olympic Games the pitch is a water-based playing surface in which artificial fibres that are densely packed for stabilisation and require regular irrigation.

Each team plays with ten field players and a goalkeeper. Players commonly use sticks made out of wood or carbon composite material to hit a round, hard, plastic hockey ball.
