BIOGRAPHY
Matthew Nelson represented Ireland in the men’s hockey tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
An attacker from Lisburn, Co. Antrim, Nelson made his senior international debut in 2016 and had accumulated 87 caps by the time of the Paris Games. He plays club hockey for Lisnagarvey, with whom he won two European club titles in successive seasons. He played professionally in Germany with Crefelder in the Bundesliga for two seasons from 2019 to 2021, and spent the 2023 season in Australia with Fremantle in the Hockey WA Premier League. He works as a PE teacher at Grosvenor Grammar School in Lisburn.
At the Olympic qualification tournament in Valencia in January 2024, Nelson scored two goals, including the opening strike in Ireland’s nerve-shredding 4-3 win over South Korea that secured their Paris place – a moment he described as a dream come true. He also scored Ireland’s historic first Pro League win over Belgium in May 2024.
