BIOGRAPHY
Sean Murray captained Ireland in the men’s hockey tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Ireland did not advance from the pool stage.
A central midfielder from Lisburn, Co. Antrim, Murray attended Wallace High School and made his senior Ireland debut in October 2015, going on to accumulate 140 caps. He plays professionally for Gantoise in Ghent, with whom he won the Belgian Hockey League in 2023 and 2024. At club level in Ireland he was part of the Lisnagarvey team that won the Men’s Irish Hockey League and EY Champions Trophy in 2015-16. He was part of the Ireland squad at the 2018 World Cup in Bhubaneswar and was one of nine players who had been involved in Ireland’s unsuccessful Tokyo qualifying campaign and remained in the programme for Paris. He captained Ireland throughout 2024, including in the historic qualification win over South Korea in Valencia in January 2024, and led the squad in their first FIH Pro League involvement.
His appointment as captain brought together a team that, he said, had worked hard as a wider group beyond the 16 selected.
