Ronan Gormley
Hockey
BIOGRAPHY
Ronan Gormley represented Ireland in the men’s hockey tournament at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
One of the most influential figures in the history of Irish men’s hockey, Gormley retired in 2018 having accumulated 256 caps – becoming the first Irish man to reach 250 – and captained the side on 121 occasions. He made his international debut in August 2004 against India in Leverkusen and captained Ireland from 2008 to 2013, helping drive the team’s rise from 23rd to a high of 9th in the world rankings.
He was a central figure in two agonising near-misses at Olympic qualification – Ireland missed out by a single goal on two separate occasions – before finally reaching Rio. From Clonskeagh in Dublin, he attended Sandford Park school and played his Irish club career with Pembroke Wanderers, winning every title on the Irish calendar, before furthering his career professionally with Club de Campo in Spain and Krefeld in Germany.
He won a European Championship bronze medal with Ireland in 2015 – at the time Ireland’s best ever finish at a senior European Championship. Former coaches Craig Fulton and Dave Passmore both cited him as the beating heart of Irish hockey’s transformation, crediting his uncompromising “no excuses” standards as foundational to the squad’s development.
