BIOGRAPHY

Jonathan “Jonny” Bell represented Ireland in the men’s hockey tournament at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, where Ireland made their first Olympic appearance in the sport since 1908 and finished 10th.

A fearless defender who played his entire club career for Lisnagarvey HC, Bell described Rio as “a year like no other” – uncharted waters for Irish hockey and a moment he looked back on with immense pride. He made his senior international debut in 2012 and went on to accumulate 181 caps, captaining Ireland on 29 occasions. He was part of the squad that won bronze at the 2015 EuroHockey Nations Championship and competed at the 2018 World Cup in India. His last cap came at the 2019 Olympic qualifiers in Vancouver, and he retired from international hockey in 2021.
