BIOGRAPHY

Katie Mullan captained Ireland in the women’s hockey tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where Ireland finished 10th.

She had led Ireland to that first-ever Olympic qualification, and before that to the 2018 Women’s Hockey World Cup final in London – the first time an Irish team in any field sport had reached a World Cup final. Ireland lost the final to the Netherlands. Mullan grew up in Coleraine, Co. Derry, attending Dalriada School in Ballymoney, and began her hockey career with Ballymoney HC.

She also played camogie for CLG Eoghan Rua, with whom she won the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Camogie Championship in 2010. She represented Ireland at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. She made her senior hockey debut in August 2012 and became Ireland captain in 2016. She won multiple Irish League and Senior Cup titles with UCD and also played in Germany for Der Club an der Alster.

She holds a BSc in Engineering Science and a Masters in Biomedical Engineering from UCD, and subsequently an MBA from Trinity College Dublin. She worked as a medical visualisation engineer, creating 3D anatomical models for surgeons, and during the Covid-19 lockdown helped produce personal protective equipment for healthcare workers.

She stepped down as Ireland captain in 2024 but continued playing.
