BIOGRAPHY
Sarah Torrans represented Ireland in the women’s hockey tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where Ireland finished 10th. A forward from Knocklyon in Dublin, Torrans was a gifted multi-sport athlete in her youth – she won bronze in the Junior Girls’ 200 metres at the All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in 2013 and set an under-16 relay record, competing alongside several athletes who would later represent Ireland at the Olympics on the track.
She chose hockey over athletics at around age 16, drawn by the team environment, and found that the pace she had developed as a sprinter proved a significant asset in her game. She plays for Loreto HC and made her senior Ireland debut in 2017, narrowly missing the squad that reached the 2018 World Cup final. She overcame two separate injuries that caused her to miss major tournaments in 2018 and 2019, making her Tokyo selection all the more cherished. She scored in Ireland’s historic opening match against South Africa – their first-ever Women’s Olympic Hockey fixture – as Ireland won 2-0. She studied nursing at Dublin City University.
